Winchendon Residents Voice their concern about approved dumping grounds. Massachusetts has a contaminated soil problem and is looking to dump its Comm-97 waste onto smaller communities in exchange for funds. The lack of transparency by Government officials caused speculation by community members who are crying foul of violations and corruption. I've collected some online resources, which we will further break down in follow-up posts.
Winchendon Weekly investigated these concerns firsthand, taking numerous photos from the air and ground, including some unsettling images and firsthand testimony.
As a long-time resident of Winchendon, I have been Kayaking the Millers River several times a year for the last seven years. I typically do a fly-by to ensure no obstructions would prevent me from having a safe and enjoyable float down the river, which spans 3.5ish miles from the River Street bridge to Lake Dennison. It's impossible to miss the unsightly sand pit and now toxic soup of materials that line the riverbed when floating down the Millers River. This year, when passing the dumping ground, there is a distinct and foul smell that cannot be found anywhere else on the 3.5-mile stretch. This smell is isolated to the area and consists of a cove that seems lifeless compared to the rest of the river, which is teeming with life.
